Utter simplicity, nothing distracts from the art. The white defines the header and navigation areas and the gray doesn't compete with any color that might be in a painting. I resized the images to 250px high. The body area is a table with 4 columns and 4 rows, the rows in the left column merged to make 1. The header, footer and navigation were turned off.
